How to Contour Face with Makeup: Tips from Celebrity Makeup Artist, Belinda Moss

Facial contouring – the special technique that uses cosmetics to enhance, diminish or define facial features – is popular and it’s easier than ever to do it with these tips from our celebrity makeup artist, Belinda Moss:

Clean Canvas: Using shading techniques on the face works best when the “canvas” is bare. Prep skin by removing unwanted facial hair with the new Jolen Facial Hair Remover Kit. Formulated with a soft-scent technology, the new three-step system includes a skin-guarding balm (for pre- and post-use), as well as soothe and cleanse wipes. In just eight minutes, skin is left hair-free, feeling silky smooth and ready for makeup application.

Perfect Palette: To create a natural contour look without being streaky, use a powder that is two shades darker than your natural skin tone.  A powder brush is great for feathery application…

Now it’s time we explain how to contour the face with makeup:

  • Cheeks: To angle your cheeks just right for application, make fish lips and apply the powder just at the hollow of your cheek bone (the groove right under the apples of your cheeks).
  • Jaw Line: Take a brush and run it right along the jaw line. If you have a double chin (no shame here!), apply the powder to that entire area along with the jawline.
  • Forehead: Run the brush along the hair line and up into the scalp to make a larger forehead appear a bit smaller.
  • Nose: Take a smaller eye shadow brush and brush the powder along the sides of the nose. Then, apply a white powder with some shimmer in a straight line right down the bridge of the nose.

Get Flawless Skin: 3 Do’s & Don’ts from Celebrity Makeup Artist, Belinda Moss

Some of the beauty regimens we do every day may actually be hurting more than helping.  In the pursuit of getting flawless skin, many women don’t realize that they are quietly sabotaging their skincare. For more gorgeous, healthy skin, consider these “dos and don’ts” to avoid common beauty mistakes, provided by celebrity makeup artist, Belinda Moss:

1. Maintaining Eyebrows

  • Don’t Wax!: Waxing facial hair not only requires a lot of maintenance, but requires that awkward regrowth stage, is painful and can actually contribute to wrinkles and skin damage.
  • Do: To get flawless skin, manage facial hair more gently and pain-free.

Jolen Creme Bleach, available in original formula or sensitive formula with aloe vera, can lighten noticeable hair on the upper lip, cheeks and sideburns.

If you’d rather remove facial hair quickly and easily, look for our new Jolen Facial Hair Remover Kit. Formulated with a unique soft scent technology, the new Jolen Facial Hair Remover Kit is the only facial hair removal product to include an easy-to-use, three-part system consisting of a skin guarding balm for pre- and post-skin protection, hair removal cream and cleanse & soothe wipes, delivering smooth, silky, hair-free skin without irritation.

Perfect for all hair types, both Jolen products are safe, gentle and effective, and take only 10 minutes or less to give lasting results for up to four weeks.

2. Always Wear Sunscreen

  • Don’t Skimp on SPF!: While most foundations, moisturizers and BB creams have some sort of SPF protection in them, you’re likely not applying enough to get full, long-lasting coverage from the sun’s rays, especially in summer.
  • Do: Apply a facial sunscreen. Look for a light, oil-free facial sunscreen with at least SPF 20 before applying your base makeup layers. And, don’t forget to protect your lips! Excessive sun exposure can cause natural lip color to fade. This can also be avoided by wearing lip balm with SPF on a daily basis year round, as well.

3. How Often to Exfoliate

  • Don’t Scrub Too Much!: While exfoliating is thought of as a great way to slough away dead, flaky skin, it can also strip away the natural oils that moisturize the face and cause irritation.
  • Do: Limit exfoliating. Use an exfoliating face wash just 2-3 times a week on alternating days and follow it up with an SPF moisturizer.

How to Use Jolen: From Bleach to Bare, the Many Uses of Jolen

You are likely on this post because you are wondering “How to Use Jolen?” Well, it firstly depends on which product you’re using and secondly, there are a number of different uses!

We’ve been in the beauty industry for over 50 years, and in that time we’ve amassed some insights into some simple and unique ways to use our products. Read on to see how others have used Jolen beauty solutions.

Brow Basics: Using Jolen Creme Bleach on Eyebrows

  • Avoid overplucking, waxing or threading the upper part of the eyebrow. Maintain a softer, more natural brow shape by bleaching those stray hairs just above the brow with Jolen Creme Bleach Original or Sensitive.
  • Brow hair typically needs to grow to a certain length to make waxing effective, but that means those stray dark hairs pop up. Get through this awkward regrowth in between waxing sessions by making that hair less visible with Jolen Creme Bleach.
  • Want to bleach your eyebrows to soften their shade against a new hair color? Use a clean spoolie brush –the same type of brush used to apply mascara – to apply Jolen Creme Bleach to your entire eye brow. Brush hair back and forth to reach the root.  Leave on for 10 minutes and test color – leave on longer for lighter brows.  Wipe off all the bleach then wash your face to remove all traces of bleach.

Body Beautiful: Bleaching Hair to make it Barely There

  • Waxing or shaving arm hair quickly becomes a maintenance nightmare. Lighten arm hair, instead, with Jolen Creme Bleach to make unwanted, dark hair go from there to barely there in just 10 minutes.
  • Enhance your pedicure by using Jolen Creme Bleach to lighten unwanted hair on your toes.
  • Troubled by unwanted hair on your stomach or back? Whether you have a lot or a little, minimize its appearance with Jolen Creme Bleach! In just ten minutes hair will become virtually invisible and blend in with your skin tone.
  • Once completely healed, keep tattoos looking bright and fresh by lightening unwanted dark hair around them with Jolen Creme Bleach. Don’t worry! Tattoos are well protected within the deeper layers of skin and Jolen Creme Bleach won’t affect the color.

Face Off: Jolen Beauty Solutions for Unwanted Facial Hair

  • The more you try to minimize “peach fuzz” on the cheeks or chin line with concealer or powder, the more noticeable it can actually become.  Minimize the appearance of facial hair by bleaching it with Jolen Creme Bleach, allowing it to blend more into your natural skin tone.
  • Or, completely remove it for smooth, silky skin with our new Jolen Facial Hair Remover Kit. Its unique three-step hair removal system gently and effectively removes unwanted hair on the upper lip, chin and cheeks. Formulated with a patented soft scent technology, Jolen Facial Hair Remover delivers smooth, silky, hair-free skin in as little as eight minutes.
  • The upper lip is a problem spot for many women, but waxing, threading or tweezing requires a lot of maintenance and can actually contribute to wrinkles! In just 10 minutes every four weeks, Jolen Creme Bleach will lighten hair on your upper lip, helping to minimize its appearance.  Or, if you prefer to be bare, remove it completely with our new Jolen Facial Hair Remover Kit. It’s pre- and post-skin guarding balm keeps any irritation in check.
  • Don’t be bothered by those pesky, dark, fine hairs on your hairline.  Jolen  Creme Bleach can minimize their appearance.  Just use a headband to push hair back and bleach those small hairs along the hairline.

Easy & Painless Facial Hair Removal at Home: A Step by Step Guide

Using Jolen’s NEW Facial Hair Remover Kit

Considering facial hair removal as a solution for unwanted hair on your cheeks, upper lip, chin or neck? The new Jolen Facial Hair Remover Kit is the only easy facial hair removal product available to include a simple three-part system consisting of a skin guarding balm for pre- and post- skin protection, the hair removal cream formulated with a unique soft-scent technology, and cleanse & soothe wipes. The new Jolen Facial Hair Remover Kit delivers smooth, silky, hair-free skin without irritation in as little as eight painless minutes.

To make sure you get long lasting results from the Jolen Facial Hair Remover, follow this step-by-step guide:

  • Step 1: Clean Skin. Your face can build up excess oil and dirt throughout the day and even during the night, causing hair follicles to get clogged. So, before you even start the hair removal process, it’s best to cleanse your face. Use your regular face cleanser and pat your skin dry.
  • Step 2: Protect Skin: Some depilatory creams can cause redness and irritation. To protect your skin, the new Jolen Facial Hair Remover Kit includes a skin-guarding balm that should be applied prior to the hair removal cream.  Lightly apply one thin layer of the Skin Guarding Balm with your fingers to the area where you wish to remove facial hair, massaging in a circular motion for 20 seconds.
  • Step 3: Apply Hair Remover Cream: Over the guarded, balmed area of your upper lip, chin, neck and/or cheeks, apply Jolen’s painless facial hair removal cream with your index finger or the contoured applicator. For best results, apply the hair removal cream in a thick, even layer to completely cover the hair you wish to remove. Leave the hair remover on for 8 minutes.
  • Step 4: Remove Cream and Moisturize: Using the soothe and cleanse wipes provided in the facial hair remover kit, wipe away hair removal cream to soothe and moisturize skin with aloe, chamomile and emollients for a silky, radiant look and feel. Thoroughly rinse your face with lukewarm water, pat dry and follow-up with the skin guarding balm as a layer of moisturizer to help prevent redness and irritation.

Facial hair removal has never been so easy!

Using Hair Bleach While Pregnant: What You Need to Know

Even if you’ve never felt the need to bleach your body hair, you may find yourself thinking about using hair bleach while you’re pregnant. And that’s perfectly normal, as many women experience an increase in the darkness and amount of body hair during pregnancy. Blame it on all the crazy hormone changes going on!

As much as you want to look radiant and feel good about yourself, you’re likely wondering what the risks to your baby are, if any, and whether you should just deal with the unwanted hair until the baby is born.

As an established brand in the facial and body hair bleaching space, we’re here to provide answers to some of the questions you may have about bleaching your facial and/or body hair while pregnant.  Ultimately, helping you make a decision you’ll be happy with!

Is Bleaching My Facial/Body Hair While Pregnant Safe?

So, should you really be using hair bleach while pregnant? Studies done thus far haven’t been able to prove or disprove whether bleaching products can be absorbed into the bloodstream, potentially harming the developing fetus. Based on the results of some studies, the current consensus is that skin absorption is relatively minimal and not likely a risk to an unborn baby’s health.

Of course, you should consult with your medical professional before using any bleaching products, just as you would prior to taking any medications or starting an exercise program.

Are Precautions Needed?

Decided you’re comfortable using hair bleach while pregnant? Here are some extra steps to take to reduce any possible risk and ensure your baby’s safety. Be advised, these are great tips to follow even when you’re not pregnant!

  • Use a minimal amount of bleach
  • Apply bleach in a well-ventilated area
  • Minimize the time the bleach is in contact with your skin
  • Wear gloves to further reduce the potential for skin absorption
  • Rinse your skin with cold water beforehand to restrict your pores and allow less opportunity for the bleach to penetrate your skin

Following these guidelines for using hair bleach while pregnant should give you a better peace of mind while you’re getting some well-deserved pampering.

There are many women who continue using hair bleach while pregnant. After all, pregnancy is a time when you want to do as much as you can to look and feel your best! And something as quick and simple as bleaching some pesky facial or body hair could be just the trick you need!

Create the Perfect Pout: Wear Bold Colored Lips with Confidence

Fall is here and makeup pallets now feature anything from sultry bronzes to brightest berry.  However, no look is complete without a bold lip applied with the most perfect lipstick application; and lucky for you, creating the perfect pout is easier than you think!

This autumn, dare to exude confidence with deep reds, golden browns, pale pinks, or even a daring purple; and always remember to choose shades that compliment your skin tone and hair color.

Make Lipstick Last: Creating a Smooth Canvas for Your Perfect Lipstick Application

Before you get started, you need to prep your lips.  We’ve outlined some tricks for the perfect lipstick application.

  • Prep your lips by exfoliating the dry skin off of them. Gently rub petroleum jelly on your lips with a soft-bristled toothbrush for about 2 minutes. Removing the dead, dry skin will create a smooth base for the color. This is an important step because it will make lipstick last longer.
  • Repair and Moisturize: Apply lip balm to your lips and allow for it to seep in before you apply your makeup. Creating the perfect pout takes time. A good way to make sure you’ve waited long enough is to apply the lip balm first and then continue on with the rest of your makeup routine.
  • Seal the Deal: Use a silicone-based makeup primer around your lip line to prevent dark colors from feathering or bleeding out of your lip line. Primer is an essential step in helping to make lipstick last.
  • Line It Up: Match your lip liner to your lipstick; it is equally important to apply this liner to the entire lip, not just the edges; using a lip liner will not only help define your lips, but it will also help set a border for the lipstick. The perfect lipstick application takes precision and patience.
  • Apply Like a Pro: Apply two coats of your lipstick of choice for even coverage. Dab lightly with a tissue to remove any excess color.

Set the Scene

Don’t let noticeable hair on your upper lip distract from your bold, beautiful color choice. Use Jolen Creme Bleach to minimize the appearance of unwanted hair so your lipstick can shine through.

Eyebrow Shaping Tutorial for Perfectly Arched Eyebrows by Celebrity Makeup Artist Belinda Moss

How many times have you caught yourself admiring another woman’s eyebrows?  We’re all guilty! Nailing the perfect shape and even shade of eyebrow color will help balance your features and frame your eyes. This eyebrow shaping tutorial, created by celebrity makeup artist Belinda Moss, is sure to help you achieve the absolute perfectly shaped eyebrows for your face.

Eyebrows for Face Shape

Creating the uniquely ideal eyebrows for face shape is one of the most basic beauty rituals you can do to ensure that you look your very best. Let’s face it, learning to create perfectly shaped eyebrows your face type can be a bit tricky.  Before you get started you need a plan of action. Celebrity Stylist Belinda Moss, has laid it out for you.

Getting Perfectly Shaped Eyebrow: Sculpting, Shading and Trimming

  • Your unique eyebrows for face shape should begin directly above your tear duct, peak in line with the outer side of your iris, and end at a point that falls 45 degrees from the outer corner of your eye. This is an important foundation for achieving perfectly shaped eyebrows since you (likely) do not want to look like Ronald McDonald!
  • If you’re eyebrows are a little long, take a clean spoolie (looks just like a mascara brush) and brush all the hairs up. Then use baby scissors, which have rounded tips to prevent you from poking yourself) and trim straight across for a polished look. Be sure not to cut too much.
  • For a soft, natural look, use eye shadow rather than a pencil. Charcoal browns look best on medium skin tones, light brown for blondes and fair skin, and deep browns for dark skin tones.
  • Start with an angled brush and apply the shadow in short strokes, slowly work your way out to the end of your eye. Afterwards, use the spoolie brush to “comb” out the color a little. This ensures proper blending for a natural finish. The last thing you want is for there to be a clear line of demarcation where you have applied shadow as filler.
  • If you recently lightened your hair and want to take your eyebrows up a shade or two, Jolen Creme Bleach can help you quickly and gently match your eyebrows to your new shade.

Remember, your eyebrows are sisters, NOT twins, so it’s ok if they aren’t identical. For more beauty tips & inspiration like our eyebrow shaping tutorial, we invite you to visit our Beauty Book.

Eyebrow Shaping With Bleach: Benefits & Preparation

Eyebrow shapes play a huge role in enhancing the overall appearance of our faces. Properly groomed eyebrows can help soften our look, give more definition to our eyes and even impact how others perceive our mood!

Keeping eyebrows looking great is an important part of any beauty routine but one that’s much easier said than done! With hectic schedules, it’s easy to neglect our eyebrows. Enter: eyebrow shaping with bleach.

Benefits of Eyebrow Shaping With Bleach

Methods such as waxing and threading can quickly become costly and it isn’t always easy to schedule time for an appointment. This is why eyebrow shaping with bleach can be a terrific way for you to maintain your eyebrows at home. It’s low-cost and really doesn’t get more convenient!

As an established beauty brand that specializes in facial and body hair bleaching, we’d like to provide some guidance for shaping eyebrows with Jolen Creme Bleach so you can keep those eyebrows looking beautiful!

Tips & Eyebrow Shaping With Bleach

Here are some tips to keep in mind when shaping your eyebrows with bleach.

  • If you can, have the initial eyebrow shaping done by a professional. This will give you a good foundation to work with and allow you to maintain the shape without much trouble.
  • Many people use bleach specifically for the tops of their eyebrows. When hair is removed from this area through waxing or tweezing, it often results in unnatural looking lines. Bleaching the tops of eyebrows allows the eyebrow shape to look soft and natural while concealing any stray or dark hairs.
  • Bleaching also helps shape areas where the eyebrows are close together or sit too low above the eyes.
  • Be sure to use extra caution when using bleach to shape your eyebrows, as you don’t want the creme getting on or in your eyes.
  • Since the eyebrows are in such a delicate and small area, using a cotton swab to apply the creme can give you more control over where the creme is placed
  • If hair isn’t completely bleached, reapply the mixture for another 5 to 10 minutes. Also, check the symmetry of your eyebrows.

Now that you’ve shaped your eyebrows with bleach, you can use a brow pencil to fill in any areas that are thin, if necessary. Use a brow comb to set the hairs in place and you’re all done!

Using Hair Bleach on Tattoos: Will it Damage My Tattoos?

If you have a tattoo, new or old, in a place where you may use hair bleach, you’re probably concerned about whether the bleaching cream is safe to use over your tattoo.

As a trusted brand in the facial and body hair bleaching space, we’d like to provide you with information on when it’s OK to use hair bleach on tattoos.

Can I Use Bleach on a Tattoo During the Healing Process?

After getting a new tattoo, it can take the skin several weeks to completely heal from any damage caused by the tattooing process. During this process, it’s critical to take extra care of the tattooed area in order to help prevent infection and protect the tattoo’s appearance.

Hair bleaching cream, which contains hydrogen peroxide, should not be used during this period.

Can I Use Bleach on Tattoos That Have Completely Healed?

Once your tattoo has healed, you’ll want to do as much as you can to keep it looking bright and fresh. Will using hair bleach damage your tattoo?

According to “Go Ask Alice“, (Columbia University’s Health Education Program’s online Q&A resource):

“The human skin is made up of two principal parts: the epidermis and the dermis. The outer, thinner epidermis consists of four or five cell layers. The inner dermis is made up of two portions…Tattoos are made by inserting ink into the deepest layers, which shed cells at a slower rate than layers closer to the surface. That is why tattoos can last a lifetime.”

So, tattoos are pretty well protected within the deeper layers of skin, and you can comfortably apply hair bleach on tattooed skin. We even called a couple of tattoo shops to confirm it’s OK to use hair bleach once tattoos are completely healed.

We’d suggest taking a few precautions for additional care:

  • Be sure to only use bleach created for hair on your face or body. We’d also recommend using a mild formula. (See our Sensitive Skin Creme Bleach for details)
  • Use a minimal amount of bleach
  • Minimize the time the bleach is in contact with your skin
  • Wait to bleach your hair as long as you can in between bleaching sessions
  • Whenever using bleaching products, stop using if you notice any adverse reactions

Follow these tips and you can relax knowing you can take care of your beauty needs and your tattoos!

How Often Can You Bleach Facial Hair?

Do you currently bleach your facial hair and love the results? Or do you plan to start using bleach to lighten your facial hair? Then you may be wondering how often you can bleach your facial hair in order to maintain the desired appearance without causing excessive irritation to your skin.

As an established and trusted brand in the facial and body hair bleaching industry, we’d like to provide some information to help answer your questions!

How Long Does Facial Hair Remain Bleached?

Bleaching facial hair is effective for as long as the hair above the surface of the skin (the hair that has been bleached) exists. This hair will grow out as the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface begin to protrude above the skin’s surface.

The growth cycle for the hair follicle to reach and break through the skin’s surface is typically two to four weeks. So, depending on each individual, the effects of bleaching facial hair may last a couple of weeks or as long as one month.

How Often Can I Bleach My Facial Hair?

Whether you bleach your facial hair every two, three or four weeks will depend on the length of your facial hair’s growth cycle. You’ll be able to determine this after a few sessions of bleaching.

There should be at least 15 days in between each time you bleach facial hair to avoid your skin becoming overly irritated. At a minimum, to remain effective, bleaching facial hair will likely need to be done every four weeks.

Tips to Follow Every Time You Bleach Facial Hair

Follow these tips to give your skin extra protection:

  • Facial skin is more sensitive than skin on other areas of the body and more prone to irritation. It also gets more sun exposure. If you have extra sensitive skin, you may want to use a mild formula. (See our product page for details)
  • Always do a patch test on another area, such as an arm or leg, prior to applying the bleach directly to your face to ensure you don’t experience any adverse reactions.
  • Never apply the creme near the eyes or inside the nose or ears.
  • Don’t use bleach over abrasions, warts, moles, or on otherwise irritated skin.

Follow these guidelines and wait to bleach your facial hair as long as you can in between bleaching sessions and your face will look and feel great!
